Anderton Boatlift And Nature Park

Anderton Boatlift Visitor Centre offers a great day out with kids in Cheshire. Known as one of the ‘Seven Wonders of the Waterways’ Anderton Boat Lift continues to lift the boats and barges the 50 feet from the River Weaver Navigation to the Trent & Mersey Canal, but it carries out this role with the most ingenious and endearing character of any structure on the canal system. Families are also able to take the walking lift if they dare and gain access to the very top of this intricate structure!

One of the best ways to experience the boat lift is to step aboard the Edwin Clarke. Children will delight in going up and down in the lift or families can enjoy a picturesque journey along the River Weaver Navigation to learn about the industrial heritage of the area and the lifts importance. You can also enjoy a trip on the Daniel Adamson Steam Cruiser.

Children will enjoy the play area which has been designed to look a bit like the lift itself. There’s a bridge, control house and mooring area and it cleverly uses blue surfacing so children can pretend they’re on the water. The Let’s Play! area is also the starting point for Anderton Boat Lift’s new nature and discovery trail which will take families into neighbouring Anderton Nature Park. Alternatively families may enjoy a family bike ride on the canal route.

The nature park itself offers a free family day out, containing an abundance of wildlife and is located on restored industrial land next to the Victorian Anderton Boat lift. Because of the lands previous use this has given rise to a number of different habitats for our little tikes to explore.

There are a number of simple routes to follow, on accessible terrain for wheelchair users and prams. There are fully downloadable directions available from the website with the option of taking a stroll along the water and a visit to the bird hide at Haydyns pool.

With so much to see and do here, Anderton Boat lift offers a great choice when looking for things to do in Cheshire.
