For a unique family day out on the Wirral, explore 850 years of history with a visit to Birkenhead Priory; ‘a unique experience of history, beauty and wonder’.
You can book a tour of the Priory and its grounds. The Priory is the oldest standing building in Merseyside. Take in some of the best views of Liverpool’s iconic waterfront from a height of 25m with a climb up St Mary’s Tower, or get in to character and raid the dressing up box which includes Medieval, Civil War, World War One and Tudor style costumes. This will surely make for a fantastic photo opportunity and encourage the children to use their imaginations. Finally, explore the Church Yard and then make rubbings on copies of the ancient gravestones of past Priors buried on the site.
Don’t forget that families can enjoy a number of events here throughout the year. Previously children have been encouraged to tell the story of the history of the site through the creation of Minecraft models for example.
Birkenhead Priory is in an easily accessible location right on the banks of the River Mersey, and the priory offers a good opportunity for families to learn all about how the Wirral grew and developed over the past 1000 years. Free admission makes this a free family day out in Wirral.
