Chester City Walls

Day out Chester, Cheshire

An absolute must if you are visiting Chester. Why not take the family and the pooch on a circular walk all around Chester with a visit to Chester’s famous Roman Walls. The city walls were constructed almost 2000 years ago when the Romans inhabited Chester (or Deva as they called it). Chester’s city walls are the longest and most complete Roman walls in Britain, and a walk on these ancient defensive walls is an excellent way of taking in the main sites that Chester has to offer.

Access to the walls is predominantly at the four main gateways into Chester i.e. Northgate, Eastgate, Watergate and Bridgegate, though there are some steps and accessible ramps in other places.

Whilst on the walls, why not hop off and visit the Amphitheatre, Grosvenor Museum, Chester’s famous Cathedral, the Roman Gardens, enjoy views across the racecourse, stroll along the canal, take in a river walk and much much more! There are plenty of vantage points to witness Chester in all its beauty.

Suggested time to walk the walls without coming off is approximately one hour. The walls are approximately two miles long.

Note: The post code provided enables you to join the walls at Chester’s Eastgate Clock,, Eastgate Street near to W H Smith.

Additional information:
*Plenty of pay and display car parks within Chester City Centre
*An abundance of cafes and restaurants nearby.
