Loggerheads Country Park, Mold

This is one of our all time favorite places to visit for a family stroll with kids and dogs in tow. Set in an area of outstanding natural beauty and steeped in history, Loggerheads Country Park Offers a tranquil walk along its beautiful wooded river valley which follows the course of the River Alyn. Walks allow families to admire its dramatic limestone cliffs and observe a range of flora and fauna. Children can learn about the power of the river and how it was used to power the working flour mill on the site. Children will also enjoy keeping their eyes out for any wooden carvings e.g. bats in the trees or lizards.

The Park has several routes outlined depending on the amount of time you have available. Most paths are paved, making the area by and large suitable for pram and wheelchair users. There are plenty of benches dotted around the country park for tired legs, or to simply admire the impressive scenery.

Our favorite route with our toddler is the river trail. There are plenty of spaces to get down to the River Alyn if the dogs fancy a cool dip or if the kids want to make a big splash. We would definitely recommend taking the wellies as this is so much fun, if the area selected is safe to do so* The River may dry up in the Summer, disappearing to underground caves deep below the limestone leaving the riverbed exposed and offering discussions about weathering and other geological processes. Other routes will take you high up for some incredible views across the Welsh Countryside and nearby mountains e.g. Moel Famau

The cafe in the tea gardens serves a selection of hot and cold snacks and even sells dog friendly ice cream so the whole family can enjoy a treat. Outside the cafe is a large space for the children to have a run around, and for families to enjoy a picnic. There’s a little wooden structure representing the mill and the river Alyn for children to play on (the often use it for a stepping stones game).

With lots of different routes suited to a range of ages and abilities, this is a must for families wanting to get outdoors on a budget.

Additional information: Free admission but there is a small car parking charge. As well as a cafe on site, there is a local pub nearby which is also dog friendly.

*We would always advise a common sense approach to water safety. Children should keep to shallow areas that are not fast moving and should be supervised at all times.
