Pontcysyllte Aqueduct & Trevor Basin Visitor Centre

Wrexham - Day out North Wales

Description

Are you after a family day out with a difference? Enjoy some amazing views with a visit to Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Wrexham.

Take a family walk along the Llangollen Canal, across the River Dee valley in North Wales and admire one of the most awesome engineering feats on the canal network…..the Aqueduct which is around 200 years old! If you aren’t afraid of heights, you can enjoy spectacular views of the valley below as you walk along the Aqueduct. Alternatively if you are a family travelling with little ones, or simply want to rest your legs, you can enjoy a narrow boat ride instead for a fee. The aqueduct itself is 125ft high and one side does not have any railings so just be mindful of little ones.

The Trevor Basin Visitor Centre is a good place to start your visit and best of all, the centre and the walk are completely free. Here children can learn all about the Aqueduct with a range of information, videos and hands on models to explore. You can also take in a visit to Ty Mawr Country Park which is located nearby.

Canoeing, fishing, walking and cycling can all be enjoyed by families here. During select weekends and holidays, some organised events are available including an introduction to canoeing. There are also numerous places to get a bite to eat along your walk.

Additional information:
*If taking a pram or wheelchair, the aqueduct itself is approximately wide enough for two people to walk side by side. Some areas of the canal walkways can be a little narrow but overall the route is accessible.
*If you are nervous about the drop (as one side isn’t guarded) then why not take a walk alongside the narrow boat?
*If taking public transport, the best option is to get on a bus rather than the train.
