Tŷ Mawr Country Park

Tŷ Mawr Country Park offers a fantastic free day out with kids in North Wales. Set in 35 acres of Green flag awarded parkland, Tŷ Mawr Country Park lies in the outstandingly beautiful Vale of Llangollen and has a number of free family friendly activities.

Children will enjoy seeing the farmland animals in this magnificent setting right underneath the dramatic arches of the Cefn Viaduct. If you are lucky, you may even spot a train passing overhead. Enjoy a picnic on the tables with the Viaduct as a fantastic backdrop. Just don’t be surprised if you are paid a visit by a Llama during lunch! Other animals include donkeys, pigs, sheep, ducks and goats, though the goats make an intermittent appearance due to their diet. Animal food is available from the visitor centre.

Information is displayed in English and Welsh to describe the habitat and help families learn about the animals that graze in the meadows. There are also some interesting wooden carvings dotted about for the children to find e.g. cockroaches, pigs, and caterpillars.

Take short walk down to the River Dee located at the bottom of the Park. The river bank is an excellent spot to relax and take in the scenery, enjoy watching the salmon leap, or to let the dogs and the kids go off to explore and make a splash*. Alternatively, why not take a longer walk along the riverside to the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. If you aren’t scared of heights you can even walk across it and take in some spectacular scenery of the beautiful valley below!

Before you return back to the car, how about a quick play on the play park or a kick about on the adjacent sports field? There is also a BMX track.

As you can see, there is plenty of activities for the whole family, making for a great family day out with kids.
