Wepre Park And Ewloe Castle

Wepre Park And Ewloe Castle

Flintshire - Days out

Description

Wepre Park is an ancient woodland spanning 160 acres. There are many features of interest in the park. The shallow depressions scattered throughout the woods are abandoned coal pits dug in the early 1880’s. Behind the Visitor Centre you’ll find the remains of what was once the well tended formal garden of Wepre Hall. Look out for the Pet Cemetery, and ‘Rector’, one of the Fremes’ family dogs, who was ‘shot’ in March 1890 because he ‘ate without stint lamb without mint’!

There are plenty of places to get down to Wepre Brook to allow for a splash or for a spot of pond dipping to explore what mini beasts lurk in the brook’s water.

If you continue to follow the trail in Wepre Park, you will embark on a tale of war, skirmishes and beheadings with a trip to Ewloe Castle. Built by the powerful Welsh Prince Llewelyn, Ewloe castle today currently stands as a ruin, but once stood as an impressive fortress, built as a deliberate statement to the English invaders that Ewloe Forest belonged to the Welsh. Let the children go off an explore this impressive stonework, climb the steps and imagine what life would have been like long ago.

At the visitor centre you can purchase a range of snacks and drinks yourselves. Of course a visit is not complete without a play on the fabulous play area which includes a range of swings, slides, climbing apparatus and zip wire. There is also an outdoor gym and a large field for some sports.

With all sorts of interesting nooks and crannies to explore a trip to Wepre Park and Ewloe castle is a fantastic choice when looking for a free day out with the kids in North Wales.

Additional information:
*Overall the terrain in Wepre Park is suitable for wheelchair and pram users though there are many steps up to the ruin of Ewloe Castle with no disabled or pram access.
*There has been a new boardwalk built by the stream and waterfall, making this area more accessible for use by families, pram users and wheelchair users as the area is now much less muddy.
