Whittington Castle is a great place for a quick stop off on your day out with kids in Shropshire.
Located not far from Oswestry, Whittington castle’s romantic ruins are steeped history, think of tales of bitter border warfare, romance and legend.
Owned and maintained by a local community group, the existing castle is now little more than a ruin but is a good example of a Norman home. Set within 12 acres, there is plenty of space for kids to run around, playing whatever games their creative minds can muster up. The castle is also a good place to go if you want to feed some ducklings and cygnets (time of year dependent).
There is also a tea room on site which serves freshly prepared sandwiches and other light lunch options such as soup, plus a selection of home made cakes and the customary ice cream.
Additional information: *Dogs on leads welcome. *Picnics welcome but be aware you may have to share with the wildlife! *Free entry but there is a small charge for car park that goes back into restoration and maintenance of the castle. *Grounds always open. Tea room open 10 to 4 at the time of publication.
