Where to explore a sunflower patch or maze in Cheshire, North Wales and Liverpool 2021

Mazes in Cheshire, Liverpool, Wirral and North Wales.

What better way to spend time as a family than head outdoors and breathe in the fresh air? To add to the fun, there are a range of Mazes including Maize Mazes for our little adventurers to explore this Summer. We have rounded up a few family friendly adventures where the kids, and the adults, can get lost in a maze!

Sunflower Fields And Mazes In Cheshire

*Adlington Hall And Gardens

Where: Mill Lane, Adlington, Macclesfield, SK10 4LF

Type of Maze: Yew

Opening hours: Sundays 2pm until 5pm until the 29th August 2021

Price: Adults, Hall and Gardens is £10.00. Adults Gardens only is £6.00. Children Hall and Gardens is £5.00 and for Children the Gardens only is free. 

Description: For a family challenge that the kids and grown ups will love, you can visit Adlington Hall and Gardens maze. Can you solve the puzzle and find the unicorn at its centre? If you do, don’t forget to keep your eyes peeled for the painted Rhinoceros “Blossom” on one side of the entrance and the crafted bug hotel on the other. Built into fallen trees the hotel has been developed by Adlington’s team of gardeners to encourage new wildlife.

Pram friendly: The Wilderness aren’t ideal for prams, especially in rainy weather. There are also steps to navigate towards the Rose Gardens and Maze.

*Alderford Lake Nr Cheshire

Where: Tilstock Rd, Whitchurch SY13 3JQ

Type of Maze: Maize Maze

Opening hours: Daily 8am to 4.30pm (Weds closes at 8.00pm)

Price: Each activity may cost extra but online prices for admittance to the site are £1.50 for adults, and 75p for children. The maze is £5 for both adults and children if booked online.

Description: Why not go on an adventure and explore this years seasonal maize maze? From interactive games, windy paths and dead ends, let’s see who can navigate their way out first, or will you get lost? Whilst here why not explore the hidden treehouses, forest swings, embark on a walk through the woods and around the lake, partake in a little inflatable water fun, go kayaking, swimming and much more!

Prebook: Not essential though prices are cheaper if booked online.

Pram friendly? The site is largely pram friendly though some users may find navigating the maze with prams a little tricky in areas.

*Applejacks Adventure Farm

Where: Stretton Rd, Appleton, Warrington WA4 4NW

Type of Maze: Maize Maze.

Opening hours:Weekends & School Holidays April – Sept, 10am – 5pm

Price: Under 90cm enter for free. Tickets are usually around £11, cheaper in advance and when bought in groups.

Description: Apple Jacks Adventure Farm provides a great day out with kids near Warrington, Cheshire. There are a range of family friendly activities ideally suited for children aged 4 to 11 years old. Can you solve the clues and make your way out of the giant 5 acre maize maze? If not, don’t worry…. Someone will give you a helping hand from the watch tower. Other activities include tractor rides, a jumping pillow, and zip lines.

Pram friendly? Most of the maze is wide enough to accommodate a pram but if it has rained the ground will of course be more tricky to navigate.

Prebook? No as there are some tickets available to be booked in person on the day but the number is limited. They are also a tad more expensive than prebooking online.

*Great Budworth Read Dairy Ice Cream – Maze Trail

Where: Heath Ln, Budworth Heath, Great Budworth, Northwich CW9 6ND

Type of Maze: Maize Maze

Opening hours: Daily 12.30 to 4.30pm

Price: Free due to the maize maze not growing as well as expected due to the weather.

Description: Although the maze hasn’t grown as well as expected, Great Budworth Real Dairy Ice Cream have hidden some scarecrows around the Trail for you to find. The animal paddocks are also great to visit and have chickens, goats and lambs, which are available to feed too!

Pram friendly: Natural path so depending on weather, the use of a pushchair may be tricky.

*Kenyon Hall Farm – Summer Trail

Where: Winwick Ln, Croft, Warrington WA3 7ED

Type of Maze: Due to weather the maze will not open this year. However, visitors can enjoy a sunflower trail instead. 

Opening hours:9am until 5pm

Price: Tickets cost £2.95 per person, £10 for a family of 4, or £12.50 for a family of 5.

Description: Wind your way through the stunning sunflower patch and picturesque wheat field, enjoying farming facts and the insta-friendly photo opportunities as you wander. Families can also enjoy a visit for a tasty treat, see the animals, play on the facilities and enjoy a spot of fruit picking. Fruit picking will cost extra. 

Pram friendly: The trail is a mixture of grass, gravel, and mud tracks through farm fields and so although some sturdy prams and wheelchairs can access the trail in dry conditions, it would be a bumpy ride.

Prebook: Yes but the farm shop, plant centre, outdoor café and play area are all free to enter with no bookings required.

* Libby’s Pumpkin & Sunflower Patch

Where: Shellow Lane, Macclesfield, SK11 9RS

Type of Maze: Sunflower Field 

Opening hours: Daily from 10am until 5 (ish)

Price: Adults over the age of 16 years are £5 and children over 5 years are £2.50. Kids under five years old go free. Cash only. Sunflowers from a sunflower patch are available for £1 per stem. 

Description: There are so many paths through the sunflower maze to explore. Which way will you go? 

Prebook? Booking system is not yet live so on the gate admittance only for now. 

Pram friendly? Natural path so pram users may prefer the use of a sling.

* Seven Sisters Posh Ice Cream

Where: Holmes Chapel Rd, Knutsford WA16 9ER

Type of Maze: Maize Maze

Opening hours: Weds to Sat 11am to 5pm. Last entry 4.30pm. Sunday from 11am to 3.30pm.

Price: £5.50 for anyone aged 12 years and above. £4.50 for anyone aged 3 years to 12 years. A family ticket for 2 adults and 2 children is £15. 

Description: Can you explore the Maize maze, find the 7 scooper hero scarecrows and solve the maze to be entered into a weekly prize draw?

Prebook? No

Pram friendly? Yes as all paths are at least 2m wide to support social distancing. However if the path gets muddy this will make navigation with prams a tad more tricky.

 

*Sunflower Maze, Prescot

Where: Water Ln, Tarbock Green, Tarbock, Prescot L35 1RD

Type of Maze: Sunflower maze

Opening hours: Daily from 10.00am until 6.00pm.

Price: £30 per car. Half of the profits will be donated to charity.

Description: Walking through a field of sunflowers is impossible without smiling. Explore 17 acres of sunflowers (equivalent to over 12 football pitches) and enjoy half a million sunflowers smiling back at you. We call it a maze but you can’t get lost! 

Prebook? Yes online via their website.

Pram friendly? Prams and wheelchairs are recommended to have bigger wheels due to the uneven ground, it could be a little bumpy!

*Sunflower Trail, Dunham Massey Ice Cream Farm

Where: Ash Farm, Dunham Massey, Altrincham WA14 5SG

Type of Maze: Sunflower Trail

Opening hours: 12 noon until 5pm

Price: £2 per person 

Description: Enjoy the sunflower trail with plenty of photo opportunities. Why not also treat yourself to a tasty ice cream or pizza too!

Prebook? No

Pram friendly? The paths are natural so footpaths have not been artificially made. Therefore people with prams may find the fields tricky to navigate.

*Tatton Park

Type of Maze: Deciduous hedge.

Opening hours: 10am until 6pm (last admittance is 5pm). 

Price: Prices per Single Attraction (Tatton Park’s FarmMansion and Gardens). Adult £8, Child (4 – 15 years) £6. Mansion and Gardens free for National Trust members but NT members must still pay the parkland fee and the farm is not included in the NT membership. Admittance to the parkland is £8 per vehicle. 

Description: Based on the same format as the maze at Hampton Court, Tatton Parks maze is located within the Gardens, not far from Tatton’s impressive stately home. Tatton Parks Farm also contains a seasonal maize maze. Please see next listing.

Pram friendly? The hedge maze is too narrow for prams.

*Tatton Park’s Farm

Where: Tatton Park, Knutsford, Cheshire, WA16 6QN 

Type of Maze: Maize Maze (seasonal).

Opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday from 11am to 3pm.

Price: Adult £8, Child (4 – 15 years) £6. Each vehicle must also pay a parkland admittance fee of £8. 

Description: As well as running wild in the seasonal maize maze, the Farm also includes a children’s adventure area. This area consists of a woodland play trail, and of course, the den building zone. Whilst visiting the farm, why not admire the animals or enjoy playing on the pedal tractors?

Pram friendly? Yes the majority of the maze is wide enough to accommodate prams but if it has been raining, the terrain will be more tricky to navigate.

*The Hayloft

Where: The Hayloft, Sandy Lane, Bold, WA8 3XP, 01925 726220

Type of Maze: Maize Maze

Opening hours: 10am-4.30pm every day throughout August and September.

Price: £3.50 per child (18 months to 14yrs), £2.50 per adult, children 2 and under are free of charge when attending with an older child / sibling. * Please note that all groups must be accompanied by an adult *

Description: Come along and have some fun finding and answering the clues in our wonderful maize maze then unscramble the letters to answer the question! Return the completed clue sheet to our coffee shop to collect a treat for the children. In October this becomes a Spooky Maze.

Prebook? Not necessary.

Pram friendly? Yes the paths are wide enough but can get muddy making it trickier to navigate the trail with a pushchair. You may wish to bring wellies!

*Trentham Gardens Hide and Speak Maze

Where: Stone Rd, Stoke-on-Trent ST4 8JG

Type of Maze: Hornbeam Hedge Maze

Opening hours: Monday to Friday from 9am until 8.00 pm.

Price: Garden day tickets cost £12 for adults, child aged three years upwards cost £9, and children under three years old go free.

Description: Within the Hide and Speak Maze, you’ll discover special talking pipes. Shout through them to help you to find your way. Discover a range of flowering meadows with bug hotels attracting lots of interesting seasonally active insects including hoverflies, bees, butterflies, moths, damselflies and beetles as you explore. The final destination is the ‘Treasure Chest’ meadow mound buzzing with pollinators on a sunny day, with a spiral path leading you to the top of the maze. From this high position, you can shout your instructions to others. Once finished, why not explore the rest of the impressive gardens including the exciting adventure playground, complete with assault course, zip wire, sand pits, nets to climb and more. There is also a toddler zone which includes boats that sail on a sea of sand. Whilst here, don’t forget to follow the fairy trail and see if you can find fairies at the bottom of the beautiful gardens, lake and woodland.

Pram friendly? Ground is flat but some parts may be narrow

*Wheelock Hall Farm

Price: £7.50 per child over one year old to play on the play area. Adults are £2. 

Description: Can you navigate your way through the maize maze as the crops tower above? There is also a large outdoor play area complete with obstacle course, an indoor soft play barn, go karts to really help tire the kids out, and of course a range of farmyard animals to see.

Sunflower Fields And Mazes in Wirral, Liverpool and Merseyside

*Brimstage Maze

Where: Brimstage Maze, Brimstage Road, Brimstage, Wirral, CH636JA

Type of maze: Maize Maze.

Opening hours: During the Summer season until the 5th Sept Brimstage maze is open daily from 10.30am until 6.00pm. Brimstage Maze is open at weekends only for the remainder of September before then closing for the season.

Price: Adult and child tickets are £10.50 online or £11.50 on the door. Children under 3 years old go free. 

Description: Brimstage maze changes their design every year. The Maize can grow up to 7 foot high and families can ensure their mini explorers return safely by solving clues to navigate through the maze. There are a range of other family friendly activities that suit all ages, e.g. jumping pillows, laser battles, crazy golf, water bombs, outdoor adventure play, fairy wood, pedal karts, soft play and much more! All this makes a visit here a great family day out and a fun filled family adventure in rural Wirral.

Prebook? Some tickets are available on the day but it is cheaper to prebook online. 

Pram friendly? The site largely is pram friendly. There are also paths in the maze that go under rather than over bridges but heavy rainfall may affect how easy the paths are to navigate with a pram.

*Farmer Ted’s Adventure Farm

Where: Flatmans Lane, Ormskirk, Lancashire L39 7HW. Just 15 mins from M58 & M57

Type of Maze: Maize Maze larger than 8 Wembley football pitches PLUS a 30m x 30m Timber Maze.

Opening hours: Open daily from 10am until 5.30pm until 5th September.

Price: Online prices are Adults £11-25 Child (3-13yrs) £15, Child (under 3yrs) £10.25, Under 1yr Free. Prices are slightly higher if you pay at the door on the day.

*Otterspool Adventure Maze

Where: 37 Otterspool Dr, Liverpool L17 5AL

Type of Maze: Timber maze

Opening hours: 9.00 until 18.00

Price: During peak times, babies under one go free, babies between 1-2 years are £6, children aged 2 to 13 years cost £12, and adults (over 13 years) cost £6.

Description: Find your way through the timber maze structure and keep your eyes peeled for any hidden surprises along the way. Other activities include burning off energy in the adventure play area, adventure golf, racing diggers, mini quad bikes, bouncing pillow and more.

Prebook? Customers should prebook a session as numbers on site are being limited due to Covid.

Pram friendly? The site in general is pram friendly but some prams may find it tricky to navigate corners in the timber maze.

*Speke Hall

Where: The Walk, Speke, Liverpool L24 1XD

Type of Maze: Conifer and timber.

Opening hours: Daily from 10.30am until 5.00pm.

Price: Entrance to the house plus the gardens with the maze costs £14 for an adult and £7 per child. A family ticket is £35 (standard admission). Garden only tickets will be available very soon. 

Description: Kids can have hours of run getting lost in the maze at Speke Hall thanks to the clever design by leading maze designer Adrian Fisher. Complete with five bridges, a tower and 12 gates, there are six possible routes that will keep the children challenged during each visit. There are also a range of horses and carts, plough and wheatsheaves for them to spot along the way too.

Prebook? No longer required. 

Pram friendly? Yes. Although there are bridges there are plenty of areas to explore with a pram.

* Conwy Valley Maze – The Big one! Please note this attraction is temporarily closed.

Type of Maze: Yew Hedge

Description: Enter into an explorers paradise and step inside the world’s largest garden maze. The maze extends to over two acres and even if you do get temporarily lost inside this hidden world, families will never be bored. This is because the maze is unique in that it consists of several different themed gardens including a butterfly garden, Japanese Zen garden, Tropical garden and more. You will also spot interesting and varied sculptures along the way.

*Manorafon Farm Park, I’m In A Maze Get Me Out Of Here!

Description: I’m in a maze. Get me out of here! Can you navigate your way to the look out towers and find the hidden animals? One of the animals has lost his name tag. Can you use the names of the other animals you see to guess the name? Whilst here, meet the reptiles, cuddle cute rabbits and feed the many wonderful farm animals including lots of babies. Description: Are you ready to navigate your way through this years incredible Maize Maze? Can you solve the puzzle to find out how many dinosaurs have hatched from their eggs?  There are numerous paths and dead ends that will truly put your skills to the test. Simply collect a puzzle sheet from reception and away you go. If you are successful in your quest, you can also earn a delicious treat too!
